One of the smartest decisions you can make in pig farming is not just choosing a good breed, but choosing the right cross combination.
Crossbreeding is used on many successful farms because it combines the strengths of two breeds into one pig that performs better under real farm conditions. We have strated to do this at Ilado Farm and here are our thoughts.
When you cross Duroc × Landrace, you often get pigs that grow very fast, with good meat quality and strong feed conversion. Duroc brings muscle and growth, while Landrace improves litter size and mothering ability.
When you cross Landrace × Large White, you get one of the most balanced combinations. These pigs are known for good fertility, strong growth rate, and high survival performance, which is why they are widely used in breeding systems.
When you cross Hampshire × Large White, you often get pigs with good carcass quality and lean meat production. Hampshire improves meat quality and muscle definition, while Large White contributes growth and adaptability.
When you cross Duroc × Large White, you usually get fast-growing pigs with good feed efficiency and strong market weight performance, making them suitable for meat production farms focused on quick turnover.
The real advantage of pig crosses is not just growth alone. It is performance under farm conditions.
Crossbred pigs tend to grow faster, convert feed better, and adapt more easily compared to single pure breeds when properly managed.
However, it is important to understand that crossbreeding is not magic.
Good results still depend on feeding, health management, housing, and daily care.
At the end of the day, the goal is simple: produce pigs that reach market weight faster while spending less on feed per kilogram of growth. We go to market at 5 months.
That is where crossbreeding becomes a powerful tool in profitable pig farming.
